Zero Product Property

If ab = 0, then either a = 0 or b = 0.

Applying the Zero Product Property

  1. Split up the factors.
  2. Set all the factors with variables equal to zero.
  3. Solve each equation.

Factoring when the LC isn't 1 and there is no GCF.

Step 1: Multiply 'a' and 'c'.
Step 2: Identify the 2 numbers that multiply to 'ac' and add to 'b'.
Step 3: Divide each number by 'a'.
Step 4: Reduce Fractions
Step 5: Insert 'x's and parentheses.
Step 6: Move denominator up in front of the x.
Step 7: Solve by applying the zero product property.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two Types of Factoring

Un-Distributing Idea

  1. Identify GCF
  2. Divide it out
  3. Write the expression correctly: GCF(What's Left)

Un-Foiling Idea (LC=1)

  1. Find the two factors of ‘c’ that add to ‘b’.
  2. Set up your parentheses and ‘x’s and insert your two factors.

Vertex Form of a Quadratic

If 'a' is positive, the U opens upward.  If 'a' is negative, the U opens downward.  'a' acts like slope (rate-of-change).

The number next to the x, tells you how many units the U-shifts to the left or right (in the opposite direction).

The number at the end, tells you how many units the U-shifts up or down (in the that direction).

To find the y-intercept, plug 0 in for x.

Standard Form of a Quadratic

If 'a' is positive, the U opens upward.  If 'a' is negative, the U opens downward.  'a' acts like slope (rate-of-change).

'c' is the y-intercept.

x-coordinate of the Vertex (& Equation of the axis of symmetry) x = -b/2a

y-coordinate of the Vertex: plug x into equation.

Intercept Form of a Quadratic

If 'a' is positive, the U opens upward.  If 'a' is negative, the U opens downward.  'a' acts like slope (rate-of-change).

The x-intercepts are p & q.

y-intercept = a(p)(q)

x-coordinate of the Vertex (& Equation of Axis of Symmetry) x = (p + q)/2

y-coordinate of the Vertex: plug x into equation.
