 Discerning (Adj.) - 02/06/13

Definition: Acute; shrewd; perceptive; discriminating.

·         The girl was very discerning of the new kid in class.
·         Albert's discerning gaze alerted me to the fact that they were playing a prank.
·         She had a discerning look on her face.
·         The student found the teacher's discerning comments hurtful.
·         Politicians are supposed to be skilled in discerning issues; however American politicians tend to lack that skill, among other things.

Vapid (Adj.) - 02/06/13
Definition: Insipid; flat; dull; unanimated.

·         The vapid room screamed for the interior decorator's touch.

Sumptuous (Adj.) - 02/05/13

Definition: Costly, lavish, luxurious, referring (for example) to food, or perhaps a room or the furnishings therein.

Definition: To incite; to irritate.

 Tempt (v.) - 01/31/13

Definition: To persuade, induce, or entice.

Conjunction (n.) - 01/29/13

Definition: a joining together or being joined together

·         They're is a conjunction (or contraction) of they and are.
·         A conjunction is used to take two sentences to form one compound sentence.
·         It is necessary for him to address his constituents.
·         Some common conjunctions are 'and', 'but', and 'although'.

Auditor (n.) - 01/28/13

Definition: (1) hearer or listener, fact checker

(2) a person authorized to examine or verify accounts

·         The auditor at my bank had to check if the account was valid.
·         So, check that, auditor!
·         The writer was upset his auditor kept rejecting his ideas.

Definition: (1) component; a necessary part or element

(2) one who authorizes another to act as agent; a member of a constituency

Delegate (n./v.) - 01/24/13

Definition: (n.) a representative; (v.) to transfer power to someone

Concession (n.) - 01/23/13

Definition: an act or instance of granting or yielding

·         The King gave concession to the knights to raid the castle.
·         To find a solution to the disagreement, concessions had to be made by both parties.
·         I stopped my car and gave concession to the people to cross the street.
·         The police officer gave concession to the bus to pass.
·         The loser of the battle gave concession to the victor.

 

Consensus (n.) - 01/22/13

Definition: an opinion held by all or most


Student Sentences
·         The consensus of the class was that the SAT Prep class was fun and new.
·         The class’ consensus was that Geometry was easier than Algebra.
·         The consensus was that it was cold outside.
·         The consensus of the theater seemed to be that the actors were horrible.
·         The consensus is that Ms. Crosby is really smart.
·         The consensus is that SATs are really hard and most people take it more than once.
·         The jury finally came to a consensus on the verdict.
·         Because the teacher, Mr. Cohen, had a bad reputation, the consensus of the students at MHS was that he was a terrible person.
